June 27, 2016 - The official opening of the Panama Canal was Sunday, June 26, 2016. The inaugural ceramonies were attended by many heads of state and the happy citizens of Panama.
The new Panama Canal which adds more traffic lanes as well as wider and deeper locks is expected to boost trade of raw materials, finished products and liner traffic. Infrastructure improvements at US ports and communication facilities have been finished or are in progress. The Panama Canal is in a much improved position to compete with US overland transportation from the West Coast and the world wide routes using the Suez Canal.
